Some Quick Points;
>Continents! Currently we have restricted play to 3 huge continents. They are completely new and are developing rapidly. We also have a spawn/port town called Port Orange where players gather to socialize, roleplay, and take a break from PVP and building.
>PVP is enabled on 2 of the 3 continents
>Mobs don't simply spawn all over the place at night, and instead spawn in great numbers in specified areas. Such as ruins of old faction bases. I'm adding new mob zones all the time.
>Factions, but power levels halved. This means not everyone is able to build huge castles. Builds tend to be smaller and more survival themed. Only the most powerful factions own castles and other large structures.
>PVP rules are limited. The Ancient World is very player driven so admin intervention is kept to a minimum.
>An old map (in use since infdev). The map has a lot of history with over 1000 books written by players with the bookworm plugin.
>Chat is localized. The only way to chat to other players from across the map is to use /tell or faction chat (between players in your faction only). Local chat has a range of 60 blocks around you. This gives the server a better RPG feel and incentive to find players.
What is the Ancient World all about?
The Ancient World is all about it's long history, game changing events, and being a social experience. When exploring the Ancient World you will come across ruined city after ruined city, many having their own stories to tell about their demise. We had the bookworm plugin running on the server for quite a while so there's hundreds of books scattered about the world just waiting to be found. Places like Port Orange are fantastic to meet up with players face to face for a chat or to trade. I feel that having global chat waters down the social part of Minecraft. Having players gather in a community area and actually seeing each other makes a huge difference as you become familiar with skins and how players behave up close, as opposed to just talking to them from across the map with bland white text. The local tavern is run by the old faction "The Fleet". They are more than happy to provide you with free food, drink, and the latest rumors. They will also allow you to place an advert in the Tavern for a fee!
Ages
On The Ancient World we label specific events or time periods on the server as "Ages". The very beginning when the map was first created is known as "The Age of Ancients". Others are The Age of Gods>The Age of Rifts>The Age of Undead>The Age of Gods II>The Age of Darkness>Now.
Rifts, and the Age of Darkness
Most facepunchers who played on our server would be familiar with the Age of Darkness, as that was the only real time period I actively advertised the server here. The Age of Darkness was a time when the sun never came up & the entire map was converted into a snow biome. It would snow 24/7 and unless you wore leather armor outside you took frost damage. Ruins on the map were infested with buffed mobs like zombies & skeletons and sometimes giants. Mobs were far more deadly as they had more health and damage output and had the ability to dig through blocks. They could also see you from much farther away, so if you built your home somewhere close to an infested ruin you could expect to have zombies chewing their way through your walls at any time.
The Age of Darkness had it's fair share of Rifts, but it wasn't the only time the Ancient World experienced them.
Rifts are world changing events that are unique to our server. At a random time at a random location, a Rift would plunge itself into our world in search of players souls. The longer a Rift was left to destroy the land, the more powerful it would become and it's undead forces would grow stronger. The only way to stop a rift was to reach it's core (or it's heart if it had one) and mine it away. Some Rifts had hearts that were huge obsidian spheres which took almost the entire server to mine at. Rifts with huge hearts like that were usually known as Super or Mega Rifts. Those Rifts were the most devastating as they could have up to 12 cores spread out over a large area which players would need to rush to and take out before they could even take on the heart. Cooperation from the entire server was required for success.
When a Rift died, it would turn to sand and collapse on itself burying cities or bases that were unlucky enough to be beneath it. Later, the sand would turn to grass then trees would grow so the land became natural again. Rifts during the Age of Darkness were quite different. They were made from Soulsand instead of Netherrack so it was far more difficult for players to dodge incoming ghast fireballs. When Soulsand Rifts die they turn to stone. It is almost like capturing that moment in time.
What Age are we in now?
If you didn't know, the players lost against the Rifts in the Age of Darkness. The world essentially ended, and I closed the server down for 3 months to bridge the gap between the end of the world and the new civilization we're playing out now. In lore, it has been around 400 years since the events of the Age of Darkness. And none of the ruins from that time have been found by players. When the server re-opened I decided not to resume play in the original areas as I felt it wouldn't give those areas much of a chance to really become history. Instead, I have restricted play to a small portion of the entire map.
You can view the entire Ancient World map here
Currently players are restricted to just 10% of the entire map and we have a port town called Port Orange which transports players to & from the 3 main continents; Dagon Fel, Sadrith Mora, & Bal Fel. Each continent has it's own unique landscape and 2 of them are PVP enabled. The third continent, Sadrith Mora, is a peaceful continent and is more suitable for new players.
We are running factions & always have. Power levels are half what they are in the default plugin so player bases tend to be smaller & more survival themed. Unless they have a lot of members. Port Orange (the spawn town) is PVP free and mostly acts as a social hub for the entire community. We have 2 taverns, one traditional and the other a criminal themed tavern hidden in the sewers.
Mobs work differently than they do in default Minecraft. At night they won't magically appear outside your base and around the map. Instead, you must seek out mobs at ruined bases. For example, The Vale is a city which was abandoned earlier this age. It is now infested with undead at night, so it is a popular location for players out to get XP. More mob zones are being added all the time and I'm looking at ways to buff their health and damage again, so stay tuned for that.
What else is unique about this age?
Actually, nothing really! The current age is probably one of the most normal Minecraft experiences we've had on the server. Things like the continents and the social town of Port Orange mix it up a bit, but overall it's mostly an Age about PVP & factions. Things will definitely change up in the future though, they always do. And who knows. When players finally return to the mainland they may awaken an old evil..</div>
